Private Wine Tastings in New York City

I host private wine tastings in New York City apartments, brownstones, and offices as a Certified Sommelier with fifteen years in the wine trade. Each tasting runs on your own guest list in your own space, whatever the square footage. I build the wine list in advance and walk you through exactly what to buy, so the wine in your glass is yours from the start.

Where tastings happen

Most New York City tastings happen in the room you already have: a Manhattan apartment kitchen, a Brooklyn brownstone parlor floor, a loft in Long Island City with room to spread out glasses, or a building's co-op or condo party room booked for the night. Roof decks work well in warmer months when a building allows outside guests, and plenty of hosts in Tribeca or the West Village book a tasting for a small office as a client event or a team night after work. Whatever the address, I plan the pour count and the flow around the space you actually have, not the other way around.

What happens at a private wine tasting in a New York City apartment?

A private wine tasting in a New York City apartment runs a minimum of three hours, guided by a wine expert who walks your guests through the bottles you bought from the list I built for you. I bring the format and the pacing, and your kitchen island or dining table becomes the tasting bar for the night.

Groups run anywhere from four people around a dining table to twenty or more spread through a larger loft, since there is no minimum or maximum guest count for a New York City tasting.

I usually plan five or six wines for an apartment tasting, moving from lighter styles into bigger reds, with a short break built in so the kitchen counter can reset between pours.

How much does a private sommelier cost in New York City?

Private sommelier pricing in New York City runs $350 per hour, with a three-hour minimum, no matter how many guests you invite. A four-person dinner and a forty-person office event pay the same hourly rate, since the price is built around my time rather than a per-person headcount, and travel within the city is already included.

The $350 hourly rate covers my time only. The wine itself is a separate cost, since you buy it directly from the list I build, which puts you in control of that budget instead of paying a per-bottle markup on top of it.

Every New York City booking starts with a free fifteen-minute call, so we can talk through your guest count, your budget, and your space before anything is confirmed or charged.

Can you host a tasting in a co-op or condo with building rules?

Co-op and condo buildings across New York City host private tastings regularly, and building rules are simply part of planning the event rather than an obstacle to it. I ask about elevator reservations, doorman notice, and any party-room booking windows in advance, so your building's paperwork is handled before I arrive.

In older elevator buildings, I plan around a single elevator car and a doorman who needs a guest list ahead of time, which usually means I arrive early to load in glassware and get set up before your first guest rings the buzzer.

A tasting for twelve in a one-bedroom apartment looks different from one in a Tribeca loft, so I count glasses, plates, and pour stations to match your actual kitchen, not a banquet-hall assumption.

Which neighborhoods do you travel to?

I travel to every corner of New York City for a private tasting, including Manhattan's Upper East Side, Tribeca, and West Village, Brooklyn's Park Slope and Williamsburg, and Long Island City in Queens. Travel across the five boroughs is already covered in the hourly rate, so there is no separate mileage or borough fee to plan around.

Where should I buy the wine in the city?

New York City hosts buy their wine from the neighborhood shop of their choice, using the list I build around your menu and your guests' taste. The city's independent wine shops are some of the best in the country, so most hosts pick up bottles from a shop near their own apartment or office.

For a bigger group, I suggest calling the shop ahead so staff can pull every bottle on the list and hold it at the register, which saves you from hunting shelf by shelf on the day of the tasting.

A good independent shop, rather than a big chain grocery aisle, is usually the difference between finding everything on the list and settling for whatever bottle happens to be left on the shelf.

Wine, locally

New York City has one of the deepest wine retail scenes in the country, which is part of why a tasting works so well here. Shops like Chambers Street Wines in Tribeca, Flatiron Wines & Spirits, and Le Du's Wines in the West Village keep small-production and grower bottles in stock that a supermarket never will, staffed by people who taste through their own shelves. That density means the list I build for a New York City host is rarely a compromise; it is often more interesting than what is available in a lot of other places I work.

A lot of New York City hosts default to booking a restaurant's private room for a group event, mostly because that is the model they have seen before. A tasting flips that: your guests are in your own apartment or your building's party room, pouring the wine you already picked up from the list I built, and nobody is racing a table turn. It is a format that suits a city where good wine and small square footage usually show up in the same zip code.
